Wrapping up 2006

Well, what the the LMC Festival this Sunday and Resonance not broadcasting on Christmas Eve and New Year Eve, we've come to the end of our first year of audition. The last three shows are up at the archive, the no-input mixing boards are decked with holly, and Richard and I are preparing to spend the "festive" season in the bosoms of our respective sets of loved ones.

There's still time to get your top ten lists to us, so if you haven't done so please do, to the address on the right, by Saturday.

We'll see you all again on Sunday 7 January, where we'll announce the results of the first audition annual report. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Contribute to the audition annual report

As we said on the programme tonight, we'd like you to send us your lists of your top ten CDs of the year, so we can compile them into the audition annual report. We'll then play pieces from the final compiled list on our shows over the Christmas/New Year period.

Just to recap: your top ten CDs of the year, with two rules - we must have either played something from the CD on audition, or it must be a CD that we would be likely to play on the show (so no voting for Richard's guilty pleasure, Jennifer Lopez) and it has to have a 2006 release date.

Please send them to the email address to your right, and please get them to us by Sunday 10 December. We're looking forward to seeing what you like for a change, rather than us imposing our taste on you!

Show 30 Mp3 up and running

Just a quick note to say that by hook or by crook we are getting the Mp3s uploaded one by one. This is all a bit hit or miss with the recordings coming from all different directions every week. I would like to say a special thanks to Robert for his invaluable support with this.

I should also point out that despite what I may have suggested during Show 30, Lloyd Barrett is not a member of The Necks. If I was the kind of person that dropped their friends in it I would say that it was Al's duff information that lead me to say that, but I'm not that kind of person, so I wont :)

Website Overhauled

Well just when you were beginning to wonder if the new Wembley Stadium would open before our website was brought up to date I've managed to find the time to give it a good overhaul.

The archive has been separated into three sections, one containing our first series of shows, another for the current run and a new Exclusives section that currently remains empty but will hopefully house Mp3's of some of the exclusives we play on audition.

Series one remains incomplete. We do not have a recording of Show 23, if anyone out there has a copy we would be very pleased to hear from you. Shows one to nine are still not there though I do have recordings. Uploading them would be a very long and tiresome job that I can't bring myself to undertake at this late stage unless you all get together and lobby us incessantly :)

The Mp3's are now up to date then. Thanks for listening

To all our overseas listeners (again)

...and those of you in the UK who are a bit vague about such things:

British Summer Time ends over Saturday night/Sunday Morning, and we go back onto Greenwich Mean Time. This means that our show is technically an hour later - 7pm GMT = 8pm BST. So if your country's daylight savings doesn't change this weekend you'll need to tune in an hour later to hear us. Or tune in at the same time and get a bonus show - Capital Eyes, which is only of passing interest if you're not living in London but nicely done by lovely people.

Play resumes at 7pm tonight

Just to confirm that we will be broadcasting tonight, although we will be bringing umbrellas into the studio just in case as it's still raining heavily as I type.

Don't forget that we have an exclusive session recording from David Lacey and Paul Vogel, two fine Dublin-based musicians. And lots of other good stuff too.

Rain stops play!

Resonance's studios are currently out of action, having been flooded the other day. It's going to take a little while to sort the equipment out and make it safe to work in, so there won't be any broadcasts from there until the middle of next week at best.

So there's no audition this Sunday. A couple of ideas for what you could do for that hour instead:

1. Perform Cage's 0'00"

2. Create your own version of audition - play some of your favourite new records and stumble out some old tosh about them, laughing occasionally. Remember to turn the air conditioning off when you talk.

3. Do both simultaneously.

even longer audition

Don't forget that tomorrow is our first show of the new season...and we've been given an extra hour to play with too! It's just a one-off, but we'll try and make the most of it.

So, for one week only, tune in at 6pm London time. Back to 7pm starts the week after.

Thursday, September 21, 2006

We're back!

Yes, the waiting is over...the first programme in the autumn series of audition will be on Sunday 8 October at 7pm, London time. We look forward to you listening in.

Latest news

Hope everyone has had a nice summer. We're just waiting for confirmation of the time slot for the new series of audition from Resonance HQ, and as soon as we know it we'll publish it here. We're chomping at the bit! Richard and I haven't been idle over the summer though - far from it.

Richard has started a record label, Cathnor Recordings, and already has two very strong releases available - Archi.Texture Vol 1 by Herve Boghossian, Mark Wastell and John Tilbury, and Body And Limbs Still Look To Light by Will Guthrie. Both releases are available now from Sound 323.

I spent some time in Sydney, Australia, picking up as much new music as I could and checking out gigs at The Now Now and Pelt. I also spent some time in the Cook Islands, but the experimental music scene isn't quite as big there...

Not to be outdone by Richard, I too have started a record label, Quincunx Sound Recordings. My first release is First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Kommando Raumschiff Zitrone, the duo of Kai Fagaschinski and Christof Kurzmann. Sound 323 should be your first port of call for this, too.

We're really looking forward to broadcasting again. Hope you're looking forward to listening.

Show 23 - visual evidence

Well, MP3s of all the shows are up (if you know where to look, heh heh) with the exception of show 23. We've tried hard, but we just can't get a useful recording of that one. If you have one that you could share with us we'd be much obliged. If we can't get one then we'll look to put up the Beins/Durrant session that formed the centrepiece of that show anyway soon.

Just to prove we really did do a show that week, here's a picture of us in full flow. Picture courtesy of OFCOM's spy camera.

(L-R: Pinnell, Wilson)

While you wait for audition to start broadcasting again, Richard and I are both planning on bringing you some new music this summer. Keep checking back here for the latest news.

Progress with the missing Mp3s!

OK, the first of the missing Mp3s is now up at the archive page on the website.
Many thanks for the patience of anyone waiting for these, they are proving a pain to do, but I am aiming to have them all up before the weekend is over.

If any regular listeners missed our last show and really want to hear it, email me at rcpinnell (at) bt internet.com and I'll put you in touch with someone who can supply you with a copy, but only if you can convince me you don't work for a major label!!!

And now, the end is near...

Tomorrow's show is that last one in the current run, as we're taking a break for summer. We'll be back in October, so keep checking the site for updates.

For our last show we've planned something a little different. Because of the nature of it we're unlikely to put a full recording of it in the audio archive (copyright laws, big corporations, etc). So if you want the full, unadulterated, end-of-term audition programme, tune in tomorrow at 7pm. It's after the England match, so you've no excuse!

LMC Website relaunched and a teaser for tomorrow's show

The London Musicians' Collective's website has just been relaunched, so go here to satisfy all your London Musician and London-Musician-related needs. Excellent work, chaps.

As well as a useful calendar of gigs in London, there's a text archive which includes the fascinating "25 Years From Scratch" booklet, and an MP3 archive with sets from last November's LMC Festival featuring the likes of Dieb 13, Tisha Mukarji, Xavier Charles, Trio Sowari and Mattin. So, if you want to find out whether those blasts during the first part of Mattin's set was as loud as you've been told, check out the downloads here.

Tune in tomorrow for a host of new releases and some exclusive material from one of the participants in the above-mentioned LMC festival. We're too good to you, really we are.

Interactive programming on audition - get voting!

Between 2001 and 2004 there were some great concerts in the basement of Sound 323, many of them recorded by Tim Fletcher. Four of the best have been released on the Sound 323 label but we've been through the list of remaining gigs and come up with what we think are the first XI of so-far-unheard recordings from the basement.

Website problems fixed and new Mp3s up

Well my hate/hate relationship with internet FTP software has had a bad week... the new website was down for a few days after I crashed the thing, but with much thanks to Robert we are back up and running with an additional page added that groups together the Mp3s of past shows.

Also added there are last week's show, plus the missing show 12 for which many thanks Lukas for helping us out by providing a recording. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to think of all the great support we are getting. (either that or this single malt is hitting the right spots...!)

So we now have shows 11 through to 14 available for download. what's more I think I now understand the whole thing better after much patient tuition from Robert and we shouldn't have problems on the same scale again.

Now its up and running again I can face Al on Sunday evening...!

Thanks for listening

www.auditionradio.info - our new website

Click here to see our brand-spanking-new website - nice one, Richard! This is where you'll need to go to listen again to our past shows and you'll find three of them there already for your aural pleasure. I think Richard has done a marvellous job, and there's much more to come. Meanwhile, this blog will continue to publish playlists and announcements, so bookmark both. There's a link to the site over there on the right, too, in case www.auditionradio.info is too difficult for you to remember.

I have a big grin on my face as I'm posting this.

Three more months - and a new time

You'll be pleased to know that we've been given another three months on Resonance, taking us up to the end of June. Thanks to everyone who has listened, talked to/about us here or elsewhere and even the couple of people who have got in touch directly with Resonance to say how much they like the show. We couldn't have done it without you!

The one difference in the next three months is that we're moving to an earlier time slot. As from this Sunday, April 2, we'll be broadcasting between 7 and 8pm BST (that's 6-7pm GMT for those of you who need to know such things). We like to think of it as a promotion, and it means we can go to the pub afterwards and still get to our respective homes at a reasonable hour (we both have proper jobs to go to on Monday mornings!).

Also, look out for a really important announcement early next week. I know I've said it before, but this time it really will happen. We're that close...

Looking at our site stats, I noticed that one of our visitors (from Wedding, Berlin - hello there!) had found us by looking at German Google. I couldn't resist sharing the "translate this page" version of Hörprobe with you all. "Justieren nicht ihren satz" indeed.

No Stairway!

"I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off."

Jeff Beck

This week marks the first in an occasional series of programmes focussed on one instrument. We're dedicating the show to solo guitar tracks that are either very hard to find, or have an unusual approach to the instrument in question, or are performed by someone who you don't usually associate with the guitar. Usually more than one of the above applies!

After our five track show last week, you may be pleased to hear that we'll be playing the most tracks we've ever squeezed into an hour.

We'll keep most of the show under wraps for now, but to whet your appetite I can reveal that we will be playing an extremely rare Keith Rowe track and something from Taku Sugimoto's very first solo guitar album. Even Taku can't track one down these days, or so I'm told.

See you then, but I'm off now to listen to "Hi Ho Silver Lining" with a fresh pair of ears.

Listen again...partially

Technical snafus continue to plague us...the minidisc we recorded the show on got accidentally erased (while Richard tried to listen to it walking down Tottenham Court Road - don't ask) and the online equivalent only recorded the first half hour, bafflingly. But anyway, dig it here. You at least get the first fifteen minutes of the Annette/Toshi duo. And I have it on good authority that Sound 323 will have copies of the Annette Krebs CD-R in due course. Relax! You'll be able to hear it all soon!

Missed the latest show? Too lazy to checkout the repeat at 9am on Tuesday morning (if it appears)? Can't get enough of that Kan Tae Hwan with I.S.O. track? Listen again to Sunday's show, wherein I manage, for a second week running, to play some jazz-influenced saxophone, much to Richard's chagrin.

The amazing disappearing radio show...do not adjust your set

Listener Kostis has reported that the Tuesday morning repeat didn't happen today, despite it being in the Resonance schedule. We'll look into it. I can confirm that we definitely did broadcast a show on Sunday night, as Dave in Nottingham agreed with my take on the Otomo record and he'd have had to have heard the programme to know that as I only worked it out myself a couple of hours before we went on air.

Some of you have noticed that we've slipped off the Resonance online schedules. I've been in touch with the station manager and it appears that our disappearance was a technical error at Resonance's end which I'm assured will be fixed ASAP (weird how the listing for the repeat was there, but the proper programme listing wasn't). It meant that we didn't record last week's programme in the same way as we did the 12/2 programme (the recording is linked to the schedule by an arcane means that I do not pretend to understand), and our back-up minidisc failed (one of a few technical nightmares that evening) so neither Richard nor I have a recording of the show yet! We'll try and get one up soon.

In fact, if you have one, please let me know and we can share it.

Assuming we get back in the schedules (we'll keep broadcasting even if we're not in there!) we should be able to bring back the recordings in the future - it seems that people like having that option. Richard and I are making it our number one priority (after getting a show on air) to make sure you can listen again online. Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Welcome to audition

Welcome to audition, the Sound 323 radio programme on Resonance 104.4FM, London's first radio art station.

audition plays new improvised music, lowercase sound and experimental music of no fixed genre. In addition to playing CDs we will have exclusive recordings of live concerts and occasional specially-recorded sessions and interviews with musicians. The programme is presented by Alastair Wilson (that's me!) and Richard Pinnell.

audition currently broadcasts between 21.30 and 22.30 GMT on Sunday nights, with a repeat between 09.00 and 10.00 GMT on Tuesday mornings. You can pick it up on 104.4FM if you're in Central London, or at the Resonance FM's listen page wherever you have web access.

We'll publish playlists for the shows shortly after original broadcast, make any announcements related to the show and also use this space to enter a dialogue with you, the listener. Feel free to use the comments boxes - we will be reading them avidly.

Meanwhile, sit back, listen in, and enter the rapidly evolving world of audition.
